What is Troubaganger?
Troubaganger = Troubadour + Doppelganger
(Don’t click on the links. Don’t check it out. Don’t satisfy your curiousity)
Troubadour = A strolling medieval entertainer who traveled from place to place, especially to sing and recite poetry.
Doppelganger = A ghostly double of a living person, especially one that haunts its fleshly counterpart.

Last Sunday evening, I was at this nice little Spanish bistro known as La Bodega KL with my buddy, Sear Haur. It’s a small corner shop that serves Spanish fare. I was there for the Troubaganger 16 Days of Activism Special.
What is this troubaganger stuff? It’s actually a gig scene for local musician to promote themselves. Bands and singer-songwriters gather to perform and hope that someone will buy their music. That evening they also tried to promote the women’s plight against violence.

Before I get back to the event, let me stray a little and talk about violence against women.
While violence may not only concern women, they are often the victims of acts of violence in society. Women and children anywhere in the world are always at risk of violence comitted mostly by men. Acts of violence is not only physical (beating, abduction) or sexual (rape, incest, forced prostitution), it can also be economy-based (child labour) and psychological (coercion, threats). Worse, gender-based violence can be institutional, including traditional customs and beliefs (marriage customs, women in schools, sex-selective abortion) which can disadvantage a woman’s ability to be self-sufficient and independent.
You remember our parliament recently passed this law that sticking out your tongue at a lady is considered sexual harassment? Well, it actually means sticking out your tongue and doing a licking motion (as in licking an ice-cream) is sexual harassment.

The gig was fun. The first few singers weren’t that good. Worse that trying to comprehend what Jay Chou is singing. Then this band, Kohl performed. Their music was good. Check them out in musiccanteen.com. You can listen to samples.
I was actually waiting for the performance by Mei Chern. I’ve heard this song she wrote, Feels Like Falling. Absolutely superb! I actually paid 20 Ringgit just to come here to listen to her only. Then, donch knoe what happened, din appear. Haiyah, wasted.
Then there’s also this band called Lucy In The Loo, proudly from… drum roll… Bangi! That’s where i stay during while in UKM. I wonder if they perform around Bangi.
Left La Bodega around 12.30. Sear Haur was actually dead tired today after his Japanese exam. But i still dragged him here with me, so that i don’t look odd being alone like a dungu. Nasib baik the fella tak tertidur.
There’s another one coming up soon in Alexis Bistro, Great Eastern Mall — the Songwriters’ Round 21. It’s on the 10th Dec. Details here. This one is not to be missed, if you want to listen to good music by the not-yet-famous local artistes.
You may contact if you are interested to go, we can carpool (me close friends only, no strangers).

Stop violence against women!
Be observant, alert and sensitive; not ignorant, oblivious and indifferent.
